Shea Sullivan
When I was five my parents took me to the local dance studio in Miami for tap lessons to help me “come out of my shell”. After about the first month, the teacher told my parents to try something else, like the Girl Scouts, because I had TWO LEFT FEET and would never be a dancer. Well, I thought I was fabulous and my parents let me stay!
The rest, as they say, is history......
My mentor:A few years later, my Mom and I were in NYC and I met Tony award-winning choreographer and Tap Master Henry LeTang. I was scheduled for a 1/2 hour lesson that turned into a five hour life changing event. I had found my home and our “mentorprotege” relationship began. Over the years, I continued to study privately with him and eventually became his assistant. I taught with him throughout the country and we worked together on many projects. The most exciting of which was assisting him on the movie, Bojangles which starred Gregory Hines. The three of us spent a fantastic summer together in Toronto working on the movie. We had a ball and that time was magical for me as a artist and aspiring choreographer. Henry and I were together for 20 years, until his passing last April. He made me the dancer, choreographer and person I am today. He was my mentor, my teacher, my friend, my sounding board and my biggest fan!
My calling:I always knew I wanted to be a choreographer starting from the early sell out performances in our living room. For Mom, Dad & the pets! In addition to the strong inspiration I received from my mentor Henry LeTang, my future career was sealed when I fell in love with Susan Stroman’s work in Crazy For You. With these fabulous influences, how could I go wrong? My personal style of choreography is contemporary with strong echoes of past techniques and styles. I believe that a great deal can be learned by studying both past and present creative artists. As a choreographer, I have been inspired by Henry LeTang, Hermes Pan, Gene Kelly, Susan Stroman, and Kathleen Marshall, among others. I have always loved the stage and I truly love to perform, but when I discovered the world of choreography,
I knew that was my true calling.
